Nasa 450 persons deprived of liberties (PDLs) ang inilipat ng Bureau of Corrections (Bucor) mula sa New Bilibid Prison (NBP) at Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) sa Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm sa Puerto Princesa, Palawan nitong Sabado.
Kasama sa paglipat ang 396 PDL mula sa medium security compound ng NBP, apat mula sa maximum security compound nito, at 50 mula sa Correctional Institution for Women sa Mandaluyong City.
Binanggit ni Bucor Director General Gregorio P. Catapang Jr. na ito ay alinsunod din sa mga planong isara ang NBP at CIW sa 2028 at gawing isang commercial development na pinangalanang BuCor Global City at isang government center.
“We really need to close NBP since it is no longer practical for us to stay here where high-end residential subdivisions are now located and the residents around the area are apprehensive and fear for their safety should a prisoner escape,” ayon kay Catapang. (Betchai Julian/Juliet de Loza-Cudia)
