Gov’t Housing Program Not Just for the Poor — One Good Shot to Equality!

A Yes To Gov’t Housing Program Being Open To All

While equity is a compassionate move, there is also something that equality brings to the table — the sense of belongingness in a nation.

Undeniably, the Philippine national government always had the poorest of the poor as the main priority in most of its assistance programs. We Filipinos greatly exhibit the Bayanihan culture or helping one another and it is one of the government’s way of helping uplift the situation of our poor brothers and sisters. It is the government being responsible, I believe. However, there is another portion of the populace that is like the middle-child — those who don’t live under the poverty level but are also not rich.

Truth be told that the inflation in the Philippines nowadays and the high cost of living in the country do not only affect the poorest of the poor. Even Filipinos who are not below the poverty level but at the same time cannot be considered financially rich experience the monetary struggles.

With this, I believe that the move of the government to make its housing program open to all, not only the poor, is a good shot to “equality”. We know that the term refers to providing the same opportunities to all regardless of the individual situations — contrary to equity that has long been the first pick in our country.

Meanwhile, I repeat that there is nothing wrong with the government exhausting all efforts to help the poorest of the poor. It is just that a shot of opening opportunities to the middle children of the socioeconomic status in PH will surely benefit countless people who are unfortunately silently in need.
